Barry’s Bay, Ontario — Madawaska Valley Guide

Barry’s Bay sits at the north end of Kamaniskeg Lake in Madawaska Valley Township, Renfrew County. It is roughly an hour north of Bancroft by way of Highways 62 and 60, and about two hours west of Ottawa on Highway 60. For a town its size, the services are complete: St. Francis Memorial Hospital, shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, and a restored historic railway station that anchors the downtown. That makes it a practical place to live full-time, not just a summer stop.

The valley has a distinct character. Polish and Kashub heritage runs through the churches, the food traditions, and community life, and the history goes deeper still — this is Algonquin homeland, and European settlement grew with the 19th-century Ottawa Valley timber trade and the Opeongo colonization road. Barry’s Bay became a village in 1933 and joined the Township of Madawaska Valley in 2001.

Kamaniskeg Lake is the centrepiece: about thirteen kilometres long and up to forty metres deep, with the Madawaska River flowing through it. That combination of a big lake and a working river gives buyers a lot of waterfront variety. Property here tends to come in three forms: in-town homes within easy reach of services, waterfront properties on Kamaniskeg Lake itself, and cottages scattered through the wider Madawaska Valley. Combermere sits at the southeast end of Kamaniskeg Lake, Bark Lake and the Madawaska River are close by, and the East Gate of Algonquin Park is a short drive away. The area is known for its snowmobile and ATV trail networks, so winter and shoulder seasons bring plenty of activity.

Rural and waterfront properties here commonly run on well water and septic systems rather than municipal services — have both inspected before you commit.
