Eels Lake, Ontario — Waterfront & Cottage Guide

Eels Lake takes its name from Eel Cow, an Ojibwe chieftain who claimed the surrounding country as his family’s hunting and fishing ground in the early 1800s. It is one of the larger lakes in the stretch between the Kawarthas and the Haliburton Highlands. Islands and bays break up the shoreline into varied habitat, and the lake has a regional reputation for clear water — Secchi readings usually run four to six metres. Surface area: 975 hectares.

The fishery mixes a natural lake trout population with smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, and yellow perch. Note that slot-size limits and winter ice-fishing restrictions protect the trout here — check the current regulations before you keep anything. Species: smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, lake trout, walleye, and yellow perch.

There is a marina on the lake for supplies, bait, and local fishing knowledge — worth its weight when you are learning new water. Access comes through a mix of resort and private cottage launches. The lake sits roughly 170 kilometres northeast of Toronto, with Bancroft and Kawartha-region amenities within reach. The combination of clear water and varied structure keeps the lake interesting for anglers who like to move around — islands, drop-offs, and bays all fish differently through the season. For cottagers, that same variety means no two shorelines feel alike, which is worth remembering when you compare properties side by side.

On a lake with islands and varied shoreline, the specific bay matters: wind exposure, depth at the dock, and sun exposure all change how a property feels day to day. Confirm your access route and whether it is year-round. As with all rural waterfront, plan on a private well and septic, and have both inspected before closing.
