Jack Lake covers roughly 3,000 acres of Canadian Shield water about five kilometres outside Apsley and half an hour south of Bancroft, in the Township of Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, reached through North Kawartha. The lake’s irregular shape breaks it into several distinct basins and bays, which means there’s almost always a sheltered stretch of water no matter which direction the wind comes from. It’s large, deep — about 140 feet at its deepest — and widely regarded as one of the most scenic lakes in the area. The shoreline is well developed, and waterfront here has seen steady demand for years; this is one of the lakes buyers name first when they talk about the region.
Fishing is a real draw. Muskie are the headline species — the lake produces them in numbers and in trophy sizes — backed by strong walleye and bass fishing. A growing black crappie fishery now pulls anglers in both summer and winter, and the lake hosts several fishing tournaments each year. Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch, and rock bass round out a species list that gives every kind of angler something to chase. Boaters are well served too: two marinas operate in Brooks Bay, and a public boat launch sits right beside Forest Glen Marina.
The community around the lake is active, with a long-running cottagers’ association, a film festival every August, and Jack’s Lake Lodge, a family-run operation in business since 1973. Apsley is five minutes away for day-to-day shopping. Silent Lake and Petroglyphs Provincial Parks are about twenty minutes out, and Bancroft is roughly thirty minutes north.
For buyers, the main thing to know is that this is a developed lake — most properties are established cottages rather than raw land, which means road access and services are usually straightforward. Private well and septic is the standard setup for rural waterfront here, so budget for inspection of both before you commit.
